Compact cameras for advanced shooters

It's a common complaint: you want the photo quality of a dSLR, but find you're leaving the camera at home because it's so large. The compromise is a compact camera with a sensor larger than a typical point-and-shoot--sometimes even the same size as a consumer or midrange dSLR--and sufficient manual control over aperture and shutter speed to allow for a measure of the creativity to which you're accustomed. What you sacrifice is the speed of a dSLR's faster phase-detection autofocus and more often than not, the improved shooting experience delivered by a through-the-lens optical viewfinder.

Sanyo's dual-camera Xacti VPC-CG10 has the design and features to easily shoot both HD-quality movies and 10-megapixel photos, but slow performance and mediocre photos keep it from being a solid do-it-all device. Read more

More zoom, less space
The average compact point-and-shoot camera has a 3x or 4x zoom lens in it. Anyone who's ever tried with one of these cameras to get in closer to a player on the field at a sporting event or snap off a shot of a bird without scaring it away knows that such a short range doesn't cut it. The obvious solution is to get something with a longer zoom, but that means a larger camera, too, that might no longer fit in your pocket. Or could it? Read more

Crave
Photography can cause undue stress and madness
CNET staff
Here's a funny video clip by two photographers in Colombia, South America. Taking a jab at some of the gearheads who troll Digital Photography Review's forums, one of them portrayed a delirious photographer who is crazy about aligning his lens just because "the professionals on DPreview said so." He also spent two days looking for a dead pixel in his camera and has deleted his entire catalog of photos because of that. Read more

Confusion over digital camera megapixels
Posted by V.K. Subramanian
Most manufacturers display the number of megapixels that their cameras have. What exactly is this number? Is it the number of pixels per square unit? If so, what is this unit? In film cameras, the size on the film had a bearing on the quality of the final print, particularly enlargements and the larger formats were preferred by professionals who wanted to print large-sized pictures. Is there an equivalence in digital cameras and do manufacturers display this? Under what name is this displayed? How much of this is good?  Read more
