Believe it or not, we're beginning to wind down the year here at CNET. Before your eyes is the final Download Dispatch of 2009. We've had a pretty busy year, reporting on everything from new security apps (incidentally, check out our Security Starter Kit) to complete coverage of Microsoft's new Windows 7 operating system. We even launched a Windows 7 blog.

But before we leave you to the merriment of the festive season, we wanted to give you a tip about organizing your holidays photos. If you missed it, Google's free photo-organizing app, Picasa, recently received a minor update to version 3.6. What is it? The capability to invite others to work on your online photo albums, which in turn means that your pals can invite you to help build their collections.

Backing up, if you have a Google account log-in, you can start using Picasa Web Albums, a free online repository for up to 1024MB in photos, from which you can easily share links to your favorite pictures with others (relax, you can always buy more storage). While you can manage and upload photos from your desktop folders, feeding the Web album from Picasa is far easier, as Picasa has the power to index every photo on your hard drive. Picasa adds a variety of tools too, including a decent photo-editing tool kit.

Now when you share an album in Picasa, you'll have the opportunity to let the people you share with contribute to your album. When you upload images from Picasa to the Web, you may likewise be granted permission to deposit your pictures in someone else's album. We're envisioning a half dozen uses here, including disparate branches of the family tree merging their holiday snaps into a single album from various locations across the country, and friends collaborating to tackle the daunting process of captioning kooky New Year's Eve pictures. We're sure you'll find more purposes, too, as you play around.

You'll find more details here on Picasa's new collaboration feature.

Wishing you a happy holiday season,

The Download Team

Every year at CNET, we close down for the winter holidays to recharge for the coming year. In 2009 we saw (and covered) the last Macworld Expo with Apple at the helm, the launch of the iPhone 3GS, and updates to almost all of Apple's hardware and software. Meanwhile, we returned every week in this newsletter with the latest Mac software and news so readers might try some of the very many third-party software offerings available at Download.com.

2010 promises to be another great year, with rumors of the Apple tablet and a (more or less) confirmed new iPhone launch in June. Over the break, we will not be sending any newsletters, but we will start up again on January 4. This is the last Mac Download.com newsletter of 2009, so get your downloads now!

This week's software includes Things, the powerful, easy-to-use, task-management app that can help you enter, organize, and act on items in your to-do lists. We also have the latest update to VMware Fusion, the virtualization program that lets you run Windows applications on any Intel-based Mac. Our game this week is Vendetta Online, the expansive space combat MMO that challenges you to captain your own ship and explore the galaxy.

Don't forget to check out our iPhone apps of the week!

HD camcorder that's easy to upload to computer

Need software for burning camcorder videos to DVDs for preservation

CNET TechSpecials partner newsletter
December 18, 2009
Need software for burning camcorder videos to DVDs for preservation and distribution

Dear CNET members,

Happy Friday! Before we touch on Irwin's question about software for burning camcorder video to DVDs for preservation and sharing, I wanted to first apologize to you for not sending out a newsletter last week. The unfortunate news is my father suffered a heart attack, but the good news is he is doing much better, thanks to God and the miracle of modern medicine. This whole frightening experience served as a great reminder again to never take anything or anyone for granted. Most of us live in a world that's chaotic and fast-paced, and as time flies, we forget to slow down a bit and appreciate all the things we have and the people who surround us. So for me, this Christmas is a celebration of all the gifts I've been given, such as life, family, friendship, and love, and also being appreciative of all things that make me who I am today. Thanks for listening. Now let's tackle Irwin's question.

First Irwin, a big congrats to you on becoming a grandpa! It must be an exciting time, and I too one day look forward to that moment. Well, Irwin, our members have come through in a huge way with a bunch of advice and recommended software ranging from free utilities to paid ones in order for you to successfully burn your camcorder videos to DVDs for preservation and distribution. Numerous titles were recommended, but the most noted titles were Pinnacle Studio, Nero, Roxio Creator, Adobe Premiere, and Corel VideoStudio. However, many of our members also pointed out that since you are running Windows Vista now, it comes preinstalled with Windows Movie Maker as a stock program that gives you all the features you are looking for, and then some. It comes highly recommended so you may not have to look far.

Irwin and others out there who are taking on the tasks of making new movies and memories of loved ones, I hope our members' recommendations will give you a good head start on your journey. But as a important reminder to help save these precious memories, please remember to back them up and not with just with one copy, but multiple copies. I have selected a few member answers in the Q&A section for starters, so enjoy! And as always, I thank each and every one of you for your contributions.

There will be no Community newsletter until after the New Year as I'll be taking some time off to be merry and festive. I wish you all a safe and an incredibly happy holidays. I hope it is filled with love and joy--from my family to yours! See you all next year! Take care.

Cheers!
- Lee

Last week's question
Need software for burning camcorder videos to DVDs for preservation and distribution
QuestionWith the arrival of my first grandchild, I bought my son and daughter-in-law a Canon HD camcorder. The camcorder is terrific, the bundled software--Pixela--is not. My first priority is to burn downloaded (to a PC running Windows Vista) videos to a DVD for preservation purposes as well as availability to family and friends. Pixela wants me to uninstall any software that has a DVD burning function before Pixela can work. That's a tall order considering how many software packages contain that function. I am not confident that once that's done the Pixela software will work as promised. So, what I'm looking for are alternative software suggestions to meet my goal of burning videos to DVDs for preservation and distribution. Please include title of software, what makes it great (features), the ease of use, any draw backs, and/or anything that you can think of that makes your software recommendation worthwhile. Thank you for your help.

Check out next week's question:
Video card performance deteriorated in a short period of time, please help!
Next week's questionSeveral months ago I installed an ATI Radeon Sapphire HD3850 AGP graphics card in my aging Windows XP machine to give it more gaming oomph. The card features 512MB of DDR3. The performance improved immediately. I was able to play Bioshock and Call of Duty 4 at 1,440x900 pixel resolution without a hiccup. The graphics were smooth with no lag or jerkiness.

Suddenly, now the games don't run well at all. The motion is choppy and the response to mouse or keyboard commands lags.

I tried adjusting the game settings to lower resolution and shutting off some of the shadowing etc., but the problem persists. I am running an Intel P4 3.0 Ghz processor with 3 gigs of ram. The video driver is up to date. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm tired of pulling out my hair on this. (I have very little left anyway :). Thank you in advance for your attention and consideration.

Stereo vs. surround: And the winner is...
Posted by Steve Guttenberg
Think about it: turntables are electro/mechanical devices that transform LPs' grooves into sound. So how can you improve that sound? If you listen to music over your iPod or computer, it's safe to say you're listening in stereo. Cars are a different story; they can have speakers in all sorts of places, so I'll grant that music in the car may not be in stereo. But the music itself at least started out as stereo; MP3s and CDs are strictly stereo, so unless you listen to a lot of 5.1 channel SACDs or DVD-Audio discs, stereo is where it's at.  Read more
