The LE8500 has a full-array backlight with local dimming, meaning hundreds of independent cells behind the screen can brighten or dim independently. In contrast, most other LED-backlit TVs have either no local-dimming ability or attempt to mimic the dimming of a full array by creating zones from an edge-lit configuration. If the LE8500 is any indication, full-array local dimming works better.

TiVo Premiere: First impressions
TiVo Premiere
The TiVo Premiere is finally here, and I've gotten a chance to live with it for the past week. Apparently, though, those models just weren't cheap enough for Logitech. The company has now taken the wraps off the Harmony 300, which will retail for just $50--making it the most affordable Logitech remote to date. Read more

3D TV vs. 3D sound
Posted by Steve Guttenberg
No matter how you look at it, 3D TV is an expensive proposition. You'll need to buy a new Blu-ray player, new TV, and possibly a new receiver. Oh, and don't forget to factor in the cost for extra 3D glasses for family and friends. So instead of investing in 3D TV, take those dollars and buy better speakers or a new receiver. That's an improvement you hear with every movie you watch and music you listen to. It's simply a smarter way to spend your money.  Read more
